MY LETTER TO THE DELEGATES
Dear Delegate,
My journey with our party began in 2016, when I was only in the 6th grade.
Back then, I relied on other volunteers to pick me up so I could help with door-knocking and writing postcards. Over the years, the only thing that's changed is that now, I have a car. I’ve since volunteered and worked for dozens of candidates, and in 2019 launched my own graphic design business, where I started local and eventually was able to help campaigns across America.
As time has passed, my interest in our political process has only grown. I was a Student Senator throughout High School, standing up and fighting for parental and student rights in opposition to school mask mandates. When my school district canceled our Winter Dance because of COVID, I organized a private, highly successful Winter Formal in its place.
Most recently, I worked to re-elect State Rep. Kathy Schmaltz, helping secure a crucial Republican hold in Michigan’s 46th State House District. This victory ultimately helped flip the State House back to Republican control, allowing us to stop Gretchen Whitmer's radical liberal agenda her last 2 years.
I’ve seen firsthand the importance and power of electing Republicans up and down the ballot—and the dire consequences when Democrats gain power.
I've seen us win and I've seen us lose, but through those times, I learned something important: we are strongest when we stand together.
When we are united about what matters the most, we grow our base, and win. This same formula led to both of President Trump’s historic wins in Michigan, and fueled conservative victories across our great state.
For over eight years, I have dedicated myself to advancing conservative values throughout Michigan, working tirelessly for our Republican Candidates in challenging districts statewide.
Now, I am announcing my candidacy for Youth Chair of the Michigan Republican Party.
We must keep our pedal to the metal and make sure we keep our momentum from this past cycle to build the operation that will be needed to flip the State Senate away from the Democrats, and "Take The Keys Back" from Whitmer, Benson, and Nessel. United together, we will defeat the radical liberals, and Keep Michigan RED!
Our mission will be clear: grow our youth base, and build on the amazing successes of President Trump in 2024 by bringing our message to college campuses, social media, trade schools, Urban areas, as well as other places too often ignored by Republicans.
Among other plans I will be releasing soon, I will work closely with our local chairs to help implement targeted, youth-oriented campaign strategies including voter registration drives, precinct-level volunteer recruitment, door-to-door outreach, and much more. Engaging young voters by mobilizing young volunteers will be a priority. After all, who better to communicate with Gen Z than Gen Z themselves?
On the road ahead, I look forward to meeting with our delegates, listening to your ideas, sharing my vision, and earning your support. I know each of you has given so much to this fight, and I am deeply thankful for your dedication to our shared mission. If you would like to connect, or have an idea to share, or just have questions, feel free to reach me at J.asherkazoo@gmail.com anytime!
Sincerely,
James Asher

MEET JAMES
James Asher’s journey into politics began in sixth grade when he met his State Representative at a local fair, and was given a pocket Constitution. That moment became significant, and James started carrying the document with him every day to school, often using it to stand up for his beliefs, countering views he saw as misaligned with the Constitution. Later, a job-shadowing experience with his State Senator gave him a firsthand look at the impact of public service, and cemented his interest in the political process.
James was re-elected to three terms as a Student Senator at Portage Northern, where he stood up for parent and student rights, particularly in opposition to school mask mandates. When the school district canceled the Winter Dance because of COVID, James took action, organizing a highly successful Winter Formal at the Air Zoo in Kalamazoo. He was specially appointed to the Superintendents Advisory Board, where he continued to advocate for our shared values.
James has immersed himself in campaign work, from doors, texts, and phone calls to helping with branding, outreach strategies, digital engagement and much more, working with local and Statewide candidates all across Michigan. Recently, he worked hard to support State Rep. Kathy Schmaltz, helping to secure her re-election to the State House in a critical swing district.
A proud Republican, James is passionate about strengthening the party’s reach, and ensuring a prosperous Michigan for future generations. James is pursuing a Political Science degree, currently attending Grand Rapids Community College. James was born in Kalamazoo, and has four siblings, along with a very fun blue betta fish. Outside of politics, he enjoys spending time with loved ones, skiing, and rooting for the Detroit Lions.
MEET JAMES AT AN UPCOMING EVENT
MORE EVENTS TO BE ADDED
MY PLAN IF ELECTED.
As a candidate for Youth Chair, James Asher is focused on engaging young conservatives across Michigan, strengthening grassroots involvement, and empowering the next generation of leaders. His platform is centered on expanding the Republican base among young voters, creating opportunities for meaningful political involvement, and bringing conservative values to the forefront of youth engagement. Here’s how James plans to make a difference:
As I campaign for MIGOP Youth Chair, I have a comprehensive vision for empowering young conservatives and strengthening our movement. However, there is one goal that stands out as foundational to achieving everything else: ensuring there is a Republican group on every campus in Michigan.
We have 15 Major Universities and 93 Colleges. Most of them do not have an active College Republican Chapter. This is a major issue!
Some may say this task is too daunting. I know it will require dedication, persistence, and innovative solutions. But I also know it’s possible with your help. Together, we can rise to the challenge and lay the groundwork for a vibrant Republican presence in every corner of our state. I know the youth chair cannot run every group, and that’s not what I am proposing, but I do believe the Youth Chair should make sure they are finding leaders on every campus, and lead a plan to get it done.
This is a serious plan, and that requires serious investment. I would work to raise 1 million in the next two years from donors/state party investment. This funding is crucial to execute a multi-faceted plan to establish and support Republican groups statewide and invest in initiatives, ads, and events that get out the youth conservative vote. I know this is a large investment, but that is what it will take to move the needle with this critical voting demographic.
HOW THE FUNDS WILL BE USED
-
Empowering Campus Groups
-
Starting with 7 schools to run as “test groups”, allocate around $10,000 per group for each campus to cover startup costs, event planning, and outreach efforts. We can see how much it may take for each group and adjust this number.
-
This funding will help groups host speakers, organize recruitment drives, and create high-quality events that draw in at least 300 students per campus, building strong and engaged memberships.
-
Create a Committee on Campus Leadership Recruitment.
-
Allocate funding toward polling and research to identify the Republican messaging that resonates most effectively with Michigan's youth. While this will be one of the more significant investments, it is a critical and worthwhile use of state party resources.
-
Bringing Speakers to Students:
Secure notable conservative speakers to inspire and energize students. These events will highlight Republican values and demonstrate that our party is deeply invested in young leaders' futures.
-
-
Coordinated Statewide Network:
-
Establish a Michigan Youth Social Media account to connect and promote the efforts of all campus groups.
-
This platform will be managed by a team of social media ambassadors within the state party, tasked with sharing updates, coordinating events, and amplifying the voices of young Republicans across Michigan.
-
Gen Z Graphic Designer
-
-
Active Mentorship and Resources:
-
Develop toolkits and training programs for new campus leaders to set them up for success.
-
Campaign Workshops across the state
-
Pair new groups with experienced mentors to guide them in organization, budgeting, and event planning.
-
WHERE THE FUNDING WILL COME FROM
I firmly believe the state party must start taking the youth vote seriously. For too long, engaging with young conservatives has been treated as a secondary priority. This must change. Prioritizing the youth vote in our funding allocation is not just an investment in today but in the long-term growth and strength of our party. In addition, this initiative will excite and inspire donors. Donors want to support a party that is forward-thinking, focused on growing its base, and ensuring it remains relevant and competitive for years to come. By demonstrating that we are committed to building a robust pipeline of young Republican leaders, we can unlock the enthusiasm and financial backing needed to make this vision a reality. Right now, there are campuses across our state where conservative students lack a voice, a platform, and the support they need to stand up for their beliefs. We can and must change that.
By organizing Republican groups on every campus, we’re not just giving students a place to connect and engage—we’re training the next generation of conservative leaders. These groups are essential for fostering enthusiasm, recruiting volunteers, and ensuring our party’s message resonates with younger voters.
Recruiting College-Level Precinct Delegates
Precinct Delegates are the foundation of our party, yet many college students are unaware of this crucial role. As MIGOP Youth Chair, I will launch an educational initiative on campuses statewide to demystify the responsibilities and influence of a Precinct Delegate. By connecting students to this vital position, we’ll build a grassroots movement that empowers young voices to shape the Republican Party and the political process.
1. Launch Awareness Campaign: Educating Students About the Role
Objective: Make students aware of what a Precinct Delegate is and why it matters.
-
Host Informational Events: Partner with College Republican chapters to organize workshops and seminars about the role and its importance.
-
Create Accessible Materials: Develop visually appealing flyers, infographics, and videos explaining what PDs do and how they influence the political process.
-
Digital Outreach: Use social media platforms to share engaging content, such as testimonials from current young PDs about their experiences.
2. Build Campus Connections
Objective: Utilize existing campus organizations and networks to identify potential recruits.
-
Collaborate with College Republican Chapters: Encourage them to promote the PD role during meetings and events.
-
Engage Political Science Clubs: Partner with student organizations that already have an interest in politics.
-
Reach Out to Professors: Work with faculty in political science and government to identify students who show promise and interest in civic engagement.
Creating a Young Conservative Candidate Recruitment Program
We need to invest in the future by identifying and supporting the next generation of Republican leaders. I will establish a robust Young Conservative Candidate Recruitment Program aimed at finding talented, motivated individuals ready to run for local, state, and national offices. This program will provide:
-
Conservative Mentorship: Guidance from seasoned Republican leaders.
-
Comprehensive Training: Workshops on campaign strategy, public speaking, and voter outreach.
-
Resources: Access to funding, networking opportunities, and tools to build successful campaigns.
Spotlighting Conservative Role Models
Inspiration is key to igniting a movement. I will organize statewide tours featuring influential conservative voices like Ben Shapiro, Charlie Kirk, the Nelk Boys, and other dynamic youth-focused leaders.
Leveraging Social Media and Campus Outreach
To amplify these efforts, I will build a coordinated communication network using social media and active campus organizations. This will ensure that every college and university is connected, informed, and energized. A dedicated Michigan Youth GOP social media account, managed by social media ambassadors, will unify messaging, share success stories, and keep young Republicans engaged.
Funding and Resources
To make these initiatives a reality, I will work with the state party to allocate meaningful resources and engage donors. The 1 million raised will be used to support these efforts as well. Showing a commitment to growing our base and investing in the youth vote will inspire donors and energize our entire party.
